After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years for being wrongly accused of treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to exact revenge on the men who betrayed him. With an estimated budget of €42.9 million, The Count of Monte Cristo is the most expensive French film of 2024. As Albert watches Hydee sing and play the guitar, it is very obvious that he is not even touching the strings half the time.. Featured in La grande semaine: Episode #1.13 (2024). I will not deny it, the film is truly beautiful in my opinion: the set, the costumes, the props… and of course the lighting (congratulations to M. Bolduc) and many other details helped to make it a wonderful experience for the eyes in my opinion. .Now with a plot as vast as Dumas’, with so many characters, subplots, subplots, and the like, the authors had to cut things, adapt, rewrite things… give away as is often necessary or critical. any adaptation! That goes without saying. But why dishonor the original author’s (Dumas’) decisions? Why give away the lessons he wanted to convey: Monte Cristo’s moral dilemma, his good nature overall, his help to so many, and his unrivaled loyalty to anyone who was good to him or deserved it in any way? Why change Haydée’s love for him to a silly romance? Even Mercedes’s understanding of Monte Cristo’s actions and why she can’t be saved and why Albert must follow her are admirable in the book…And what are we left with here? Pure show? I can assure you that’s not what will be left when you read it.
