There is no Christianity in this universe
Line of Events
The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and Franklyn Cicero, a greedy mayor. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script in the early 1980s, but the film was put on hold partly due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of second-unit footage and holding a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey. but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) "predicted" the attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not begin development again until 2019. At 21:40, Catilina’s character utters the phrase "Holy Jesus Christ!" in astonishment. Yet within the universe, the city of New Rome is rooted in a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, a dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The will of Cronus” or at 01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is prominently displayed, while there are many more Roman deities). There is no reason for Catilina to use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” and in such a context..
And well, I
Cesar Catilina: *Do you* want to help me Julia Cicero: Yes. well, I want to learn. Cesar Catilina: And do you think one year of… medical school qualifies you to plow through the riches of my Emersonian mind? Julia Cicero: Does it qualify me? Cesar Catilina: Yes. Julia Cicero: [mockingly] Does it qualify me? Cesar Catilina: Yep! Julia Cicero: Does it qualify me?
Cesar Catilina: YEEEEEES!
Julia Cicero: You have no idea about me! Do you think I’m nothing, just a companion? Cesar Catilina: No, nothing, but I make time for people who can think? About science. And literature, and… architecture and art. Do you think I’m cruel, selfish, and insensitive? I’m working without caring what happens to either of us. So go back to the cluuuub, expose it all, and follow the kind of people you like.
Julia Cicero: Great!
Cesar Catilina: Come back when you have more time! "Ultimate IMAX Experience" in the film version, the actor takes questions at a filmed press conference. You see every inch of it on screen. That’s the good thing about Francis Ford Coppola’s latest and possibly last film. Between the actors, the costumes, and the set design that reimagines New York as the New Rome, you see everything. The only question this raises is why 42nd Street from Third Avenue to Times Square was left intact, and what about the movie theaters from 7th Avenue to 8th Avenue. It’s natural, though, to be skeptical about what is essentially admirable Robert Moses’ biography?
What do I think?
. Especially since it was apparently written by Ayn Rand in response to the METROPOLIS letter and then handed over to Abel Gance after convincing him to make a film about Julius Caesar instead of Napoleon. And don’t forget the quotes from Marcus Aurelius. It’s a very learned film overall. To understand the details requires you to have read extensively on Roman history, seen a lot of silent films, and known New York in the latter half of the 20th century, including the middle and upper class escapes of the 1950s. Through the vagaries of my upbringing and chaotic self-education, I can claim those things. Yes.
